It easily can when the body is weakened by diseases and illnesses like cancer, and undergoing excruciating treatments designed to damage tissue, like chemotherapy. So what if someone is going through all of this and not getting something in their diet that is strengthening and replacing that tissue, like bone broth?

    Well, the membrane lining of the digestive tract goes from something that was much more like a solid walled plastic bag to something that leaks out fine particles like a mesh strainer. Now, things that the immune system was supposed to handle in the gut are being leaked into the body before they've been properly dealt with and the threat is not yet neutralized. Now the immune system has to go into overdrive, because the rest of the body isn't used to dealing with this threat level; that usually occurs in the digestive tract that is designed to handle that. The law of inertia says that it's hard to stop something once it's started. The body's immune system is fighting everything so hard all the time, that even when there are no threats, it's still in attack mode and doesn't stop in time to keep from destroying friendly cells and beneficial bacteria.

    This is referred to as auto-immune diseases, and breaches in the stomach lining is a major way they occur.

    On top of this, the body just wants certain nutrients from the food, but if it's getting the whole thing before the digestive system properly deals with it and it leaks through, the rest of the body isn't quite sure how to handle it. It goes into attack mode on the very foods that it needs and starts producing histamines like crazy, so now allergies are being formed against many of the foods being consumed also. The stomach starts to patch up those leaks, restore proper ecology and once again serves as the front line for the immune system, as it should.

If someone can't digest food properly, not only is the immune system unable to quarantine it, but also the body isn't able to absorb as much of the nutrients from the food.     Our modern world lends itself to a highly processed diet with far more toxins and contaminants than getting food fresh and straight from the source. This has a few different effects on our digestive system. First, the 'good bacteria', like probiotics, are weakened and cannot help the digestion the way they should. Second, this gives room for harmful bacteria to thrive in the gut, which feeds off of the more processed carbohydrates we have become so accustomed to consuming. And third, our lack of proper nutrients makes it hard for the lining of the digestive tract to rebuild and repair itself, which means the bacteria, and the toxins they create as waste, can leak into the rest of the body and cause all kinds of health issues.

    What a bone broth cleanse does is first, cut out all of the unhealthy foods that feed the harmful bacteria in our guts.     Many Hollywood A-List celebrities are doing bone broth detoxes and loving the results! Not only is it helping them lose weight, feel better and have healthier, smoother and shiny skin, hair and nails but there’s actually much science behind a bone broth detox.

    Bone broth’s glycine assists your liver to detox:

    Our liver’s main role is to eliminate toxins from the body. The liver’s capability to detox toxins efficiently is restricted to the quantity of glycine accessible in your body. One of the richest sources of glycine of glycine is bone broth. In one rat study, rats fed glycine displayed substantial improvements in recovery from alcohol-induced fatty liver disease compared to rats that were not fed glycine.

    Another bone broth detox benefit is that glycine clears out excess methionine, which is another amino acid found in big quantities in eggs and muscle meat. Too much methionine can increase blood levels of homocysteine, and the process of breaking down homocysteine raises the body’s requirement for B vitamins. Glycine from bone broth and the broken down cartilage in it can aid in breaking down homocysteine without the need for B vitamins.

    Bone Broth Fast

    Many people go on a water fast for a day and a bone broth fast would be very similar but more nutritional. Any longer bone broth fasting should be done with other foods such as juices, green juices and other highly nutritional liquids.

    Dr. Pompa recommends for longer bone broth fasts to consider the information below:

     

    To do a 4-day bone broth fast using a 5-6 quart crockpot:

    • Plan to start your broth with 2-3 marrow, feet, neck, or shank bones, and a piece of organ meat, such as liver or heart, if you like.
    • If you’re using chicken or turkey, choose either whole birds, or cuts such as thighs, backs, drumsticks, and necks that have the skin and bones intact; include the giblets if they’re available.   You can also use the carcass from a roasted bird.
    • For fish, include the entire head and all the bones.

    Add to this:

    • Purified water, 3-4 quarts
    • Celtic Sea Salt, 2-4 tablespoons (best to start low and adjust flavor as needed after cooking)
    • An acid (usually raw apple cider vinegar, organic balsamic vinegar, naturally fermented, unseasoned rice vinegar)
    • A chopped onion
    • You might also add a little bit of seaweed: a couple of pieces of dulse or kombu, a sheet of nori, 4-5 pieces of wakame – any of these choices is fine.  Doing so will increase the iodine composition of the broth, an important nutrient missing from the diets of those who don’t consume a lot of seafood and who use natural sea salts that are not commercially-iodized.  Personally, I like the flavor of the dulse the best – it doesn’t lend a “Chicken of the Sea” profile to the broth, yet is still full of trace minerals.

    Place everything into a cool crock-pot, and set it for a 4-hour cook time.  Fill the pot with enough water to leave only about 1.5″ of space at the top, and cover with the lid.  At the end of the 4-hour setting, it will kick into the “keep warm” setting, where it will stay until you direct it otherwise (use a meat thermometer to insure that your lowest setting is at least 180 degrees Fahrenheit.)  Allow the ingredients to all cook together for at least 14 hours, preferably 20 or 24.

    After this 24-hour cooking cycle, plan to remove any meaty bits, which you can set in the freezer to consume after your fast.

    Pour yourself steaming mugs of broth to consume throughout this first full day of your fast.  If you find the broth is too oily, ladle most of it from the crockpot into glass jars to cool in the refrigerator.  This will cause the fat to congeal at the top of the broth.  Simply remove this disc of fat, then pour your broth back into the crockpot, and set the temperature to a 4-hour setting, with the bones in the broth.  (Don’t throw this fat away, though!  It’s an excellent medium for sautéing vegetables once you’re done with your fast.  Store it in a glass jar in your refrigerator for up to a week.)  The broth will re-heat quickly, and the pot will shift to the “Keep Warm” setting following this re-heat.

    Each day, you should be consuming 3-4 quarts of broth.  Since you’re going to be adding so much fresh hot water to the pot to bring it back up to its original level, you will be removing many of the fats and proteins that otherwise would have overcooked in this continual process.

    For each successive day:

    • Bring the level of liquid back up to the original amount with fresh, boiling water each time you pull a mug from it
    • Add a little Celtic Sea Salt, to taste
    • Add a splash of vinegar if you like, to continue to de-mineralize the bone
    • Add a sprinkle of seaweed from time-to-time, to keep the iodine and other trace minerals up in the broth
    • Keep the crockpot on the “Keep Warm” setting

    After Day Two of the fast, you should consider adding a fresh bone or two, to keep the broth rich in gelatin and some fats. Do this just before bed at the end of Day Two, so that it will be ready for you on the morning of Day Three.  When adding the bone(s), push the heat up to the 6-hour setting, before allowing it to settle into the “Keep Warm” setting once again.

     

    Paleo Bone Broth

    Bone broth should become a staple for anyone who’s starting a journey into the Paleo diet and lifestyle. You can use paleo bone broth regularly for soups, sauces, stews, curries and just about any dish that requires cooking a piece of meat or vegetable in a liquid.

    Paleo bone broth might be about the last nutrition powerhouse that a lot of Paleo dieters aren’t making use of. In the paleo diet, bones should be a main staple of one’s diet along with plenty of fresh meat and fat from animals, organ meats and nutrients from fruits and vegetables.

    You can make a paleo bone broth from virtually any kind of bones including those from chicken, beef, pork, lamb, and fish.

    You'll want to get bones that are pre-cut to expose all of the marrow, or have your butcher cut the bones when you buy them. This exposes the marrow to the water so that the vital elements leach out easier. Plus, all of those cuts is a lot more surface area in general, and both marrow and bone will get more leached from them this way. So heat some up and enjoy your bone marrow broth! It's as good for you as it feels; calming, comforting, healthy and satisfying.

     

    Bone Broth Eczema

    This is a very long article, didn’t read it all, but our basic broths are made with the meat(bones), & we always used vegetables in our broths, they will gel as they cool in the fridge. We never cooked noodles or rice in broth.
